GSTR-2B reconciliation with TallyPrime
Match your GSTR-2B JSON with the purchase bills and notes in TallyPrime, see every ITC mismatch, and save what is missing without entering it twice.
The GSTR-2B Reconciliation reads the GSTR-2B file you download from the GST portal. It matches every supplier invoice and note with the purchase entries in TallyPrime. You see what matches, what is different and what is missing, with the ITC on each. You can then save missing bills, supplier notes and reverse charge bills in TallyPrime. Nothing saved from here goes in twice.
Before you start
The Balancely Connector is running. Your company is open in TallyPrime.
Your supplier ledgers in TallyPrime have their GSTIN. We match by GSTIN, never by name.
You have the GSTR-2B JSON file for one month from the GST portal.
Only Owner, Admin and Accountant roles can use this page. Viewers cannot open it.
How to download the GSTR-2B JSON
- 1
Sign in to the GST portal and open the Returns Dashboard.
- 2
Choose the financial year and the month.
- 3
Under GSTR-2B, choose View, then Download and the JSON option.
Check the file against TallyPrime
- 1
In Balancely, open Accounts, then GSTR-2B Reconciliation.
- 2
Choose the company at the top under Company. The return month comes from the file itself.
- 3
Drop the file on Upload your GSTR-2B. The AI-Powered Invoicing page then shows if a bill is in your GSTR-2B.
- 4
The check starts on its own. It compares the file with your purchases and notes in TallyPrime.
- 5
Read the results in the tabs. After you fix something in TallyPrime, choose Check again.
Small differences in how a number is written do not matter. INV/045 and inv-45 count as the same bill. Totals that differ by ₹1 or less count as equal.
This file is for another GSTIN
Read the results
The tiles show the count and ITC for On the portal, Matched, Mismatch and Only on portal. They also show the number skipped. Each tab lists the documents, with a search box.
| Tab | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Only on portal | On the portal, but no bill or note in TallyPrime has that supplier GSTIN and number. | Tick the ones to save from here, or enter them by hand. |
| Mismatch | Found, but the total, date or number is different. Or it is entered more than once, or the supplier ledger has no GSTIN. | Read What differs and fix the entry in TallyPrime. Then choose Check again. |
| Matched | Same supplier GSTIN and number. The total and date agree. | Nothing. |
| Only in books | Bills and notes from registered suppliers, dated in the return month, that are not in this GSTR-2B. | The supplier may not have filed yet. Follow up with them. Notes in your books show here only when this GSTR-2B has notes of that kind. |
| Skipped | Documents that are only listed. You cannot save them from here. | Read Why skipped and enter each one by hand. |
Some bills have the same supplier, the same total and a date within three days, but another number. These show under Mismatch as a likely match. They are never saved on their own. If it is a different bill, choose Not the same bill. If several bills fit, choose the right one under Bill in TallyPrime. The document then stays under Mismatch, matched to that bill. Not the same bill or None of these moves the document to Only on portal, ready to save.
What is skipped and why
Documents where ITC is not available. Enter them by hand if you still need them in your books.
Changes to invoices already reported. Fix the first bill in TallyPrime instead.
Imports of goods, including from an SEZ unit. Enter them from the bill of entry.
ISD credit passed on by your head office. Enter it as a journal.
Credit and debit notes under reverse charge. Change your reverse charge entries by hand.
A document listed twice in the file is counted once.
Save missing bills and notes
- 1
On Only on portal, tick the documents to save. Then choose Continue to save.
- 2
Under Ledgers to use, choose a purchase ledger for each GST rate, for within state and other state. Also choose your CGST, SGST, IGST and cess ledgers. Reverse charge bills need their own purchase ledger and the tax payable ledgers. You need a Round-off ledger only when a value is rounded.
- 3
Under Suppliers, choose Use a ledger in TallyPrime, or Add as a new supplier. A new supplier goes under Sundry Creditors as GST Regular. Its state comes from the GSTIN.
- 4
Each row shows Ready or Needs a choice with the reason. Fix what it asks.
- 5
Choose Save with the count, for example Save 12 bills in TallyPrime. Up to 500 entries are saved at a time. A reverse charge bill is two entries. If you tick more, the first 500 go now. Save the rest after.
A progress card then shows what was saved, what failed and anything already in TallyPrime. We remember your ledger and supplier choices for the company when you save. So next month needs fewer clicks, in any browser and for anyone on your team.
What happens in TallyPrime
| On the portal | Saved in TallyPrime as |
|---|---|
| Supplier invoice | A Purchase voucher. The bill number is the invoice number, and the tax is exactly as filed. |
| Supplier's credit note | A Debit Note. The purchase and its input tax are reversed. |
| Supplier's debit note | A Credit Note on the purchase side. The purchase and its input tax go up. |
| Reverse charge invoice | A Purchase voucher without tax, marked reverse charge. Also a Journal that debits input tax and credits the reverse charge tax payable. |
If one invoice has several GST rates, each rate gets its own purchase line.
The narration says which GSTR-2B month the entry came from.
Entries already in TallyPrime are never changed or removed. We only create new vouchers, and new supplier ledgers you ask for.
A document saved from here before is held back. If you deleted it in TallyPrime since then, the row says so and it is saved again.
Each entry saved in TallyPrime counts towards your plan's TallyPrime entries for the month. A reverse charge bill counts as two entries: the bill and its tax journal. New supplier ledgers made here count too. Reading and checking do not.
Download the results as CSV
Choose Download as CSV to save the tab you are on, for example "GSTR-2B Sep 2026 - Mismatch.csv". It has the portal's number, date, taxable value, each tax and total. Next to these are the supplier, number, date and total in TallyPrime, with the notes. Share it with a supplier or keep it with your working papers.
After a check, bills on Purchase bills also show if they are in GSTR-2B. This includes bills read before you uploaded the file.
When something goes wrong
Each heading is the message as Balancely shows it. Find yours, or search every message on Fix a problem.
“This is not a JSON file. On the GST portal, choose Download, then JSON. Upload that file here.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Upload file step, in the red box This file could not be read.
The file is not JSON. Often the Excel file was chosen on the portal. Or the .zip file was uploaded without extracting it. Nothing was read or saved in TallyPrime.
- 1
On the GST portal, open the Returns Dashboard and choose the financial year and month.
- 2
Under GSTR-2B choose View, then Download and the JSON option (not Excel).
- 3
If the download is a .zip file, right-click it, choose Extract All, and use the .json file inside.
- 4
Upload the .json file here.
It worked when: The page moves on to Check against TallyPrime.
Next time: See how to download the GSTR-2B JSON.
“Only on portal”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Check against TallyPrime step, the Only on portal tab and tile.
No purchase or note in TallyPrime has this supplier's GSTIN and bill number. The bill may not be entered. Or its supplier ledger has a different GSTIN. Or it has another number. Nothing is saved in TallyPrime yet.
- 1
Look for the bill in TallyPrime by supplier and amount.
- 2
If it is there, check three things: the supplier ledger's GSTIN, that the ledger is under Sundry Creditors, and the supplier invoice number. Correct what is wrong, then choose Check again.
- 3
If it is really missing, tick it and choose Continue to save, or enter it by hand.
- 4
Do not save a bill that is already entered. Correct its GSTIN or number instead. Otherwise it is in your books twice.
It worked when: After you correct or save it, Check again shows it under Matched.
“Not in this GSTR-2B yet: the supplier may not have filed it.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Only in books tab.
A bill or note from a registered supplier is in TallyPrime for this month. But it is not in this GSTR-2B. You get input tax credit on it only once it shows in a GSTR-2B. Nothing was changed in TallyPrime.
- 1
Check the supplier's GSTIN and bill number in TallyPrime for typing mistakes. A mistake there also puts the portal copy under Only on portal.
- 2
If they are right, ask the supplier to report the bill in their GSTR-1.
- 3
A bill the supplier reports late shows in a later month's GSTR-2B. Check that month's file when it comes.
Next time: Download the CSV of this tab. Share it with suppliers who have not filed.
“Total differs by ₹1,180.00: ₹11,800.00 in TallyPrime, ₹10,620.00 on the portal.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Mismatch tab, What differs column.
The bill was found by supplier GSTIN and number. But its total differs by more than ₹1 from what the supplier reported. Nothing was changed in TallyPrime.
- 1
Compare the bill in TallyPrime with the supplier's invoice.
- 2
If TallyPrime is wrong, open the purchase voucher in TallyPrime and correct it.
- 3
If the supplier reported it wrongly, ask them to amend it in their GSTR-1.
- 4
Choose Check again.
It worked when: The row moves to Matched.
“Date differs: 05 Sep 2026 in TallyPrime, 03 Sep 2026 on the portal.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Mismatch tab, What differs column.
The bill was found. But its date in TallyPrime is not the invoice date the supplier reported. If you date purchases on the day the bill arrives, this is normal. Your credit does not change. Nothing was changed in TallyPrime.
- 1
Open the purchase voucher in TallyPrime and compare its date with the date on the supplier's bill.
- 2
If the date is wrong by mistake, correct it in TallyPrime.
- 3
If you used the day the bill arrived on purpose, change nothing.
- 4
If the supplier reported the wrong date, ask them to amend it in their GSTR-1.
- 5
Choose Check again after any correction.
It worked when: The row moves to Matched once the dates agree.
“Bill number differs: INV-1045 in TallyPrime, INV/1054 on the portal.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Mismatch tab, with Not the same bill or the Bill in TallyPrime list.
No bill has the portal's number. But a bill with another number has the same supplier and total, on a close date. It is likely the same bill, entered with a different number. Nothing was changed in TallyPrime. A likely match is never saved on its own.
- 1
If it is the same bill, change the supplier invoice number in TallyPrime to the portal's. Then choose Check again.
- 2
If several bills fit, choose the right one under Bill in TallyPrime.
- 3
If it is a different bill, choose Not the same bill (or None of these). It moves to Only on portal, ready to save.
It worked when: The row moves to Matched after checking again.
““Sharma Traders” has no GSTIN in TallyPrime. Add 27AABCS1234F1Z5 to that ledger.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Mismatch tab, What differs column.
A bill with this number and amount is in TallyPrime. But its supplier ledger has no GSTIN. Bills are matched by GSTIN, so this one cannot be matched. Only suppliers under Sundry Creditors are matched. Nothing was changed in TallyPrime.
- 1
In TallyPrime, go to Gateway of Tally > Alter > Ledger and open the supplier ledger.
- 2
Set the registration type to Regular. Enter the GSTIN shown in the message.
- 3
If the ledger has the GSTIN, check it is under Sundry Creditors. If not, move it there.
- 4
Save the ledger.
- 5
Choose Check again in Balancely.
It worked when: The row moves to Matched.
Next time: Keep every registered supplier's GSTIN on their ledger under Sundry Creditors.
“TallyPrime could not be read”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Check against TallyPrime step, in place of the results, with Try again.
Balancely could not get your purchases from TallyPrime. The text under the title gives the reason. Nothing was saved.
- 1
Make sure the computer with TallyPrime is on, the connector is running and TallyPrime has this company open.
- 2
Close any message box open in TallyPrime.
- 3
If it says too many reads, wait a minute and close other Balancely tabs that are reading reports.
- 4
Choose Try again.
It worked when: The tabs and tiles appear.
Next time: See Connector and TallyPrime for each connector message.
“Choose a purchase ledger for 18% within your state.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Save what is missing step, the status of each row. Rows that need a choice are not saved.
Balancely needs to know which ledgers to use. Then it can save the bill in TallyPrime. This is normal in the first month for each company. Nothing is saved until the row shows Ready.
- 1
Under Ledgers to use, choose a purchase ledger for each rate. Choose one for your state and one for other states.
- 2
Choose your CGST, SGST, IGST and cess ledgers. They must already be in TallyPrime.
- 3
For reverse charge bills, choose their own purchase ledger. Choose the reverse charge tax ledgers too.
- 4
If a row rounds, choose a Round-off ledger.
- 5
Under Suppliers, choose Use a ledger in TallyPrime and choose the ledger. Or choose Add as a new supplier.
- 6
When the rows show Ready, choose Save.
It worked when: Every row you want shows Ready.
Next time: Balancely keeps your choices for the company and your whole team. Next month needs far fewer.
“This is not a GSTR-2B file. Download the JSON from the GST portal: Returns, GSTR-2B, Download (JSON).”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Upload file step, in the red box This file could not be read.
The file is JSON, but for another return, such as GSTR-2A, GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B. This page reads only GSTR-2B. Nothing was read or saved.
- 1
On the GST portal, download the GSTR-2B JSON for the month. GSTR-2A is a different file.
- 2
Upload it here.
- 3
If the file is a GSTR-1, upload it on Accounts > GSTR-1 Reconciliation instead.
It worked when: The page moves on to Check against TallyPrime.
“The GSTR-2B for Sep 2026 has no invoices in it.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Upload file step, in the red box This file could not be read.
No supplier reported a bill or note to you for this month. Or the file was edited or cut short, so its month is missing. Nothing was read or saved.
- 1
Check that you downloaded the right month and GSTIN on the portal.
- 2
Download the JSON again and upload it without opening or editing it.
- 3
If the month really has no bills, there is nothing to check.
“This file is for another GSTIN”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Check against TallyPrime step, red box above the results. Continue to save stays greyed out.
The GSTIN in the file is not the one TallyPrime has for the company chosen at the top. Nothing was saved.
- 1
Choose the right company under Company at the top. The check starts again for it.
- 2
Tick This file belongs to only if the company's GSTIN in TallyPrime is old, or it really has this registration too.
- 3
Better still, correct the GSTIN in the company's GST details in TallyPrime. Then the next check matches.
It worked when: The red box goes away, or turns amber once ticked, and Continue to save can be chosen.
“Entered 2 times in TallyPrime.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Mismatch tab, What differs column.
More than one purchase in TallyPrime has this supplier's GSTIN and bill number. The bill may be entered twice, and its input tax credit counted twice. Nothing was changed in TallyPrime.
- 1
Open the supplier's ledger in TallyPrime and find the entries with this bill number.
- 2
If one is a copy, cancel or delete it.
- 3
If they are different bills, correct the supplier invoice number on the wrong one.
- 4
Choose Check again.
It worked when: The row moves to Matched.
“ITC not available (place of supply rule). Enter it in TallyPrime by hand if you still need it.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Skipped tab, Why skipped column.
The portal says input tax credit on this bill is not available to you. So it is not saved from here. Nothing is saved in TallyPrime from this tab.
- 1
Check the bill with your CA. Ask if it is a real expense and why credit is not available.
- 2
If you still need it in your books, enter it by hand in TallyPrime. Do not claim input tax credit on it.
- 3
Leave it out of the input tax credit you claim in GSTR-3B.
“Amends invoice INV/1054 already reported. Correct that bill in TallyPrime instead.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Skipped tab, Why skipped column.
The supplier changed a bill from an earlier month. Saving it here would add a second bill. Nothing is saved in TallyPrime from this tab.
- 1
Find the first bill in TallyPrime.
- 2
Change it to the new values shown on the portal.
- 3
If the first bill was never entered, enter it by hand with the new values.
“Credit passed on by your head office (ISD). Record it with a journal.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Skipped tab, Why skipped column.
These need details the GSTR-2B does not have, such as the bill of entry. So they are only listed. Nothing is saved in TallyPrime from this tab.
- 1
For ISD credit, enter a journal in TallyPrime that moves the credit to your input tax ledgers. Ask your CA how.
- 2
For imports, enter the purchase from the bill of entry. Add the customs duty and IGST paid.
- 3
For reverse charge notes, adjust your reverse charge entries by hand.
““Input IGST” is chosen for both the input credit and the tax payable. Use a separate reverse charge ledger.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Save what is missing step, a reverse charge row marked Needs a choice.
A reverse charge bill has two tax lines: input credit, and the tax you must pay. They need different ledgers. With one ledger, the two cancel out. Nothing was saved.
- 1
In TallyPrime, create a ledger under Duties & Taxes for the tax you pay, for example Output IGST (RCM) payable. Set the right type of duty.
- 2
Under Ledgers to use, choose it as the reverse charge tax ledger.
- 3
Keep your input ledger for the input credit.
It worked when: The row shows Ready.
“TallyPrime did not say it was saved. Look for it in TallyPrime. We will not add it again.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, the note on an Only on portal row, and under the row on Save what is missing.
This bill was saved from here before. It may still be saving. Or TallyPrime's answer was lost, so it is held back. Or it was saved but is no longer in TallyPrime, so it would be saved again. TallyPrime may already have the bill. You cannot tick held-back rows.
- 1
For on its way, wait for it to finish. Then choose Check again.
- 2
For did not confirm, look for the bill in the Day Book in TallyPrime. If it is there, choose Check again.
- 3
If it is not there, open it in Accounts > Activity History, choose view import, then Save failed entries again. It cannot be saved twice.
- 4
For no longer has it, it is saved again on purpose. If you deleted the bill on purpose, untick it.
It worked when: The row shows under Matched after checking again.
Next time: Do not use Fix & retry in Activity History for these bills. Save them again from the import.
“The bills could not be saved in TallyPrime”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Save what is missing step, red box above the Save button.
TallyPrime did not take a new supplier, or the whole save stopped. Up to 500 entries means you ticked more than 500 entries. Each reverse charge bill counts as two: the bill and its tax journal. Suppliers added before this stay in TallyPrime. No bills were saved this time.
- 1
For up to 500 entries, untick some rows, such as the reverse charge ones. Save in two rounds.
- 2
If a supplier already exists and it is the same supplier, under Suppliers choose Use a ledger in TallyPrime and choose the ledger.
- 3
If it is a different party with the same name, enter another name under Add as a new supplier.
- 4
For connector or plan messages, see Connector and TallyPrime or Plans and billing.
- 5
Choose Save again. Nothing is saved twice.
It worked when: The progress card Saving bills and notes from appears.
“Start with your GSTR-2B”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, the Save what is missing step, after the page was reloaded.
Only the open page keeps the file. If you reload or open the page again, it is gone. Nothing was lost. Bills already saved stay in TallyPrime and are not saved twice.
- 1
Choose Upload file.
- 2
Upload the same GSTR-2B JSON again. The check starts on its own.
- 3
Continue to save as before.
“The invoice value ₹11,800.00 is ₹100.00 away from taxable value plus tax (₹11,700.00). Check this invoice with the supplier.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Save what is missing step, a row marked Needs a choice.
No choice can fix this. The supplier's figures do not add up, or a value is missing in the file. This row is never saved from here.
- 1
Get the bill from the supplier.
- 2
Enter it by hand in TallyPrime from the bill.
- 3
If the supplier reported it wrongly, ask them to amend it in their GSTR-1.
“Entered as a purchase in TallyPrime. TallyPrime’s own returns expect a supplier’s debit note as a Credit Note.”
Where you see it: Accounts > GSTR-2B Reconciliation, Mismatch tab, What differs column.
The supplier sent a debit note to charge you more. It is entered in TallyPrime as a Purchase. But TallyPrime's GST returns read a supplier's debit note from a Credit Note voucher. Nothing was changed in TallyPrime.
- 1
Ask your CA whether to keep it as it is.
- 2
To match TallyPrime's returns, enter the debit note as a Credit Note voucher. Then cancel the purchase entry.
- 3
Choose Check again.

Common questions
How do I reconcile GSTR-2B with Tally?
Download the GSTR-2B JSON from the GST portal, open GSTR-2B Reconciliation in Balancely, choose the company and upload the file. It matches each document with your purchase entries in TallyPrime by supplier GSTIN and bill number.
How do I match GSTR-2B with my purchase register?
The check reads the purchase vouchers, debit notes and credit notes in TallyPrime and lists each portal document as Matched, Mismatch or Only on portal. Purchases of the month that the portal does not have show under Only in books.
Why does my ITC show a mismatch?
The total, date or bill number is different on the portal and in TallyPrime. Or the bill is entered twice, or the supplier ledger has no GSTIN. The What differs column gives the exact reason and both values.
Can it save missing purchase bills in Tally?
Yes. Tick documents on Only on portal and save them as Purchase vouchers, Debit Notes, Credit Notes or reverse charge entries, with the tax exactly as on the portal.
Will it create duplicate entries?
No. A document saved from here before is held back. A bill number TallyPrime already has for that supplier is also stopped.
Why are some invoices skipped?
Documents with ITC not available, amendments, imports, ISD credit and reverse charge notes are listed only. Each row says why and what to do instead.
